In the early 1890s, Luigi Donatantonio, our founder from Minori in Southern Italy, arrived on English shores. As you can imagine he missed the culinary delights of his native Italy, so his old friends back home sent him over pasta, olive oil, tomatoes, salamis and cheeses.

Many of Luigi’s fellow Italian immigrants asked to buy these products from him and eventually in 1902 he rented premises in Clerkenwell – an area later to be named, and still known as, Little Italy, and he opened a delicatessen to supply his fellow émigrés.

Over the years the company steadily developed its product range and reputation, with product quality and customer service always at the heart of the range he stocked.

The business continued to be run by the Donatantonio family for over a century, maintaining its London base, and was at the forefront of the introduction of many Italian products to UK consumers.

In late 2007, the business was acquired by management and investors, since when it has enjoyed strong growth.

Today Donatantonio continues to supply a wide range of premium ingredients from around the world to food manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers, maintaining a strong focus on its heritage of Italian fine foods and produce.

Longstanding core products including pasta, tomatoes, canned vegetables and olive oil still remain at the heart of the business although the range has rapidly expanded to include over 500 lines. Recent introductions include the amazing Wowbutter nut free peanut butter spread and a range of gluten free pasta shapes under the Sotelli brand.

We’re proud to maintain strong relationships with our suppliers, enabling them to guarantee the provenance of ingredients and our buying and technical teams work closely with our suppliers to ensure high and consistent standards of quality.

The company is very proud to have been granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment as a Tradesman to The Queen in 2001, a further endorsement of the quality of our range and the service we offer. Our warehouse is accredited to AA standard under BRC 7.
